The Far Ends
St. Stephen
On the St. Croix River facing Calais, Maine, St. Stephen pairs border-town practicality with some of the region's most reachable prices. And yes, the chocolate is real.
- About 4,400 people
- Roughly 1 hour 15 minutes west of Saint John
- Home of Ganong, Canada's oldest chocolate maker
What it's like
St. Stephen runs at small-town scale with a border crossing in the middle of it. Ganong's presence is everywhere, from the factory to the chocolate museum, and the St. Andrews resort coast is a short drive south.
Buyers come for value: character homes here cost what renovations cost elsewhere. Condition varies widely, which makes local eyes on every showing worth having.
The houses
Older single-family homes dominate, with riverfront properties and rural holdings in the surrounding parishes. Investment and seasonal interest rides on the St. Andrews tourism corridor nearby.
